What is it?

Transcription jobs involve converting audio into typed text. There are many different types of transcription jobs: general, legal, medical and business being the main ones. In a transcription job, you will typically be working as an independent contractor. If working over the net you will be sent a live audio feed or short recorded audio clips. Requirements are typically a fast typing speed of around 70+ words per minute and previous experience in the field of about 2-3 years.

For medical transcription jobs, a medical background and familiarity with medical terminology is useful. A high school diploma or GED is required. Although medical transcription does not require it, there are two certificates available which may open doors known as the RMT and the CMT conducted by the AHDI.

Legal transcription jobs also requires a high school diploma/GED

You may be required to purchase specialist equipment, such as a foot pedal and be familiar with software. It may take time to develop a good ‘ear’ for transcription. However, with a lot of practice your speed and accuracy can improve dramatically, leading to higher earnings. I would recommend Express Scribe, some free transcription software, you can use to practice. For more transcription jobs, please see below.
